After more than a decade of meticulous planning and restoration, one of London’s most storied landmarks is poised for a remarkable new chapter. This autumn, the monumental Admiralty Arch, standing guard at the head of The Mall, will transform from a century of governmental service into the Waldorf Astoria London – Admiralty Arch. This opening marks the long-awaited debut of the prestigious Waldorf Astoria brand in the UK capital, breathing new life into a Grade I-listed national monument. Originally commissioned by King Edward VII as a tribute to his mother, Queen Victoria, and completed in 1910, the arch was designed by Aston Webb, the very architect behind Buckingham Palace’s iconic façade. For over a hundred years, it hummed with the work of civil servants and hosted historic figures like Sir Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming, its corridors echoing with affairs of state and literary inspiration. Now, its next act begins as a sanctuary of modern luxury, welcoming overnight guests into a piece of living history.
The hotel’s location is nothing short of legendary, situated in the prestigious enclave of St. James’s. Its very fabric is woven into the city’s identity, offering breathtaking views down the ceremonial expanse of The Mall to Buckingham Palace on one side, and across to the vibrant energy of Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s Column on the other. As one of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2026, with reservations available from March 2027, this project represents far more than a simple conversion. According to General Manager Guillaume Marly, opening reservations is a “defining moment,” a proud step in “reawakening” the arch. The vision is to create a destination that feels “unmistakably London: historic in stature, contemporary in spirit.” The aim is a delicate balance—honouring the immense weight of history while crafting an experience that is timeless yet vibrantly current, ensuring the building remains a vital part of the city’s pulse.
Within its vast 200,000 square feet, the hotel will house 114 rooms, suites, and private residences, each thoughtfully designed to reflect and respect the building’s majestic Edwardian architecture. The accommodations, with more than half dedicated to spacious suites and residences, pay homage to the site’s naval heritage through their names—the Nelson Suite, the St. James’s Residence, the Victory Residence—echoing Britain’s seafaring legacy. This thoughtful curation ensures that guests are not merely visiting a hotel, but inhabiting a narrative, surrounded by elegance that speaks of both grand tradition and refined, contemporary comfort. The design promises to be a dialogue between the original, awe-inspiring features—high ceilings, intricate stonework, and monumental proportions—and the discreet, state-of-the-art amenities expected of a world-class luxury establishment.
A cornerstone of the Waldorf Astoria experience will be an exceptional culinary journey, led by two internationally celebrated chefs. The hotel has secured a remarkable partnership with Northern Irish chef Clare Smyth and French culinary legend Daniel Boulud, who together hold an impressive eight Michelin stars. Chef Smyth will introduce Coreus, a fine-dining restaurant celebrating Britain’s coastal bounty through sustainably sourced seafood and seasonal produce, accompanied by an intimate Whiskey & Seaweed bar for contemplative drinks. Meanwhile, Chef Boulud makes his much-anticipated return to London with Café Boulud, an all-day rooftop destination serving everything from breakfast to dinner and afternoon tea. Its terrace will offer guests unforgettable panoramic views over St. James’s Park and the royal palace, making dining here a truly cinematic London experience.
Beyond sleep and sustenance, the hotel will cater comprehensively to well-being and celebration. A dedicated spa will provide a serene urban retreat, featuring individual and couples’ treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room, and hydrotherapy pool, all complemented by a private relaxation area for complete repose. For grand occasions, the hotel will unveil a magnificent ballroom, crowned by a stunning nine-metre antique Murano chandelier painstakingly restored in Rome. This versatile space is set to become a new epicentre for London’s most prestigious events, hosting everything from glittering gala dinners and fairy-tale weddings to high-level conferences, all within the historic embrace of the arch.
The transformation of Admiralty Arch into the Waldorf Astoria is, therefore, more than a hotel opening; it is a historic restoration and a gift back to the city. It represents a successful endeavour to preserve a beloved monument not as a museum piece, but as a living, breathing space for a new generation to experience. Guests will walk the same halls as prime ministers and novelists, now finding within them world-class dining, restorative wellness, and sumptuous accommodation. This project masterfully threads the needle between reverence for the past and excitement for the future, ensuring that this iconic archway continues to stand as a proud and active sentinel to London’s enduring story, now with its doors warmly open to the world.
