‘Discovering our daughter’s body will haunt me for the rest of my life’

The profound and enduring grief of a family shattered by violent loss was articulated in Belfast Crown Court today, where the parents of Kathryn Parton courageously shared the irreversible impact of their daughter’s murder. Ernie and Geraldine Parton, whose only child was killed in her Belfast home in May 2024, described a life permanently altered, where every moment is now shadowed by absence and trauma. For Geraldine, speaking with a voice heavy with emotion, the loss is a constant, oppressive presence. She remembered Kathryn as a vibrant, intelligent young woman—a devoted mother, a lover of animals, music, and fitness, with aspirations for university that were stalled by circumstance. “She was our only child, our daughter who we waited for 14 long years for. Our gift,” Geraldine said, emphasizing that the grief they carry is woven into the fabric of their daily existence, from waking moments to overwhelming quiet.

The psychological toll on the family is severe and unrelenting. Geraldine detailed the sleepless nights, the persistent anxiety, and the agonizing cycle of “what if” and “if only” thoughts that compound their sorrow. There is, she explained, a deep anger at the senselessness of the act—a life taken, a family broken—and a struggle to accept that this catastrophe was caused by unnecessary violence. The loss has reverberated through their wider family and circle of friends, straining relationships and casting a pall over every gathering. “We are now not only grieving parents,” Geraldine noted, “but also caregivers to a child who must live with this loss for the rest of their life.” The tragedy is not an event from which they will recover; it is a permanent state that has reshaped their identity and future.

Daily life itself has been dismantled. Familiar routines have disintegrated, and simple tasks are now burdens overshadowed by grief. Family occasions, once sources of joy, have become painful reminders. Christmas, birthdays, and celebrations are now occasions for visiting a grave, highlighting an absence that forever alters the atmosphere of their home. Geraldine described the haunting silence—the empty chair, the unanswered phone calls, the belongings too painful to move. Most poignant is the loss of a future forever stolen: they will never see their daughter marry, have more children, or achieve her dreams. These are not abstract concepts but visceral, personal wounds that underscore a future irrevocably altered.

The emotional devastation has manifested in tangible physical and mental decline. Geraldine spoke of stress-related health issues, chronic exhaustion, and a pervasive physical deterioration linked directly to the trauma. “I cannot find the words to express the grief I bear with the loss of my only child,” she confessed, detailing how she wakes each morning to relive the horror. Her anguish is compounded by witnessing the deterioration of her husband, Ernie, who discovered their daughter’s body. “I no longer have the comfort and kindness of a daughter who I could confide in and lean on. Instead, there is an empty place… I am alone and bereft without her. I live with this every moment of every day and I am destroyed with the weight of the loss.”

Ernie Parton’s experience, articulated in a Victim Impact Statement read by a support worker, adds a layer of acute traumatic detail. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder following the discovery of Kathryn after she had been deceased for six days. “I cannot find the words to explain the shock and horror of finding my daughter lying dead on her bedroom floor in a pool of blood. That image will haunt me for the rest of my life,” his statement said. The intrusive memories and flashbacks have crippled his ability to function, leaving him without motivation or focus. He has lost not only his child but also, for his grandson, a mother. “I find it hard to face the future with any positivity,” he admitted, encapsulating a future forever dimmed.

In a related legal development, Suzanne Love, the mother of Kathryn’s partner Jamie McAllister, was sentenced to four years in prison for her role in the aftermath of the killing. Love, from Belfast, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice by removing items from the crime scene and washing evidence, and to assisting an offender. Her son was among three individuals detained following Kathryn’s death, which a post-mortem concluded resulted from a sustained beating. While this sentence addresses a facet of the justice process, for Ernie and Geraldine Parton, the courtroom statements underscore that no legal outcome can mitigate the lifelong sentence of grief they now endure—a sentence born from an image that will haunt a father, and a silence that will forever echo in a family’s home.
