Morrisons evacuated as man with 6-inch knife goes on ‘rampage’ and shoppers flee

The quiet morning at a Morrisons supermarket in Bradford shattered on December 5th last year when 22-year-old Milad Panjshiri stormed inside, wielding a six-inch knife. What followed was a scene of pure terror, described later in court as a “rampage.” Panjshiri, an Afghan national, began violently trashing the store’s aisles. Video footage captured him hurling wine bottles to the floor, where they exploded into clouds of shattered glass. He stabbed at cans and pushed over entire shelves laden with bottles, the cacophony of breaking glass and crashing metal sending a wave of panic through the store. For the staff and shoppers simply going about their day, this sudden eruption of violence transformed a routine grocery trip into a nightmare.

In the midst of the chaos, the gravest threat emerged when Panjshiri turned the blade toward a female member of staff, waving the knife in her direction. Earlier, a coworker had watched in horror as he tapped the knife menacingly against his leg. The store’s employees, though undoubtedly terrified themselves, sprang into action to protect the public. They urgently ushered dozens of shoppers, including elderly individuals, out of the building to safety. The court later heard how staff were left panicked and in tears as they tried to guide confused and frightened customers through the unfolding crisis, with some members of the public frozen, unsure of what to do. The incident forced a full evacuation, leaving the supermarket a wrecked and hazardous scene.

Police were called just before 11 a.m., responding to reports of a man causing damage with a knife inside the supermarket. Officers arrived to find a scene of devastation and a community on edge. They subsequently arrested Panjshiri and recovered the weapon. The violent outburst, while physically contained to property damage, inflicted deep psychological wounds on those present. In an era where news of public attacks is, tragically, not uncommon, Recorder Tony Watkin noted that both staff and the public would have had a “heightened awareness” of the potential for tragedy, making the fear in that moment even more acute and visceral.

When the case reached Bradford Crown Court, a more complex picture behind the rampage began to surface. Mitigating, Fuad Arshad explained that significant mental health issues were a central factor in Panjshiri’s behaviour. He stressed to the court that there was no evidence Panjshiri had attempted to physically attack any members of the public, though the threat posed by his brandishing of the knife was severe and undeniable. Further complicating the matter, the court heard that prison staff had raised serious concerns about Panjshiri while he was in custody, noting issues with violence, psychosis, the creation of improvised weapons, and a pattern of non-engagement with the system meant to help him.

Ultimately, Recorder Tony Watkin sentenced Panjshiri to 18 months in prison, describing the incident as “a very troubling offence” and noting that there “can’t be that many more serious examples of offending of this nature.” However, the judge clarified that due to sentencing rules, Panjshiri may only serve about 40% of that term before being released on licence. Adding another layer of uncertainty, Recorder Watkin pointed to Panjshiri’s immigration status, stating it was outside the court’s knowledge whether he would remain in prison or face other proceedings. Notably, Panjshiri refused to leave his prison cell to attend his own sentencing hearing, an act that underscored the profound challenges and disengagement highlighted in his case.

This incident leaves in its wake a tapestry of difficult questions. It is a story of a community frightened, of staff displaying bravery under extreme duress, and of a young man whose actions were fueled by profound mental distress. While the court delivered a legal sentence, the event speaks to broader societal challenges: the thin line between public safety and personal crisis, the desperate need for effective mental health intervention, and the lingering trauma inflicted on ordinary people going about their daily lives. The shattered glass in the aisles has long since been cleaned up, but for those who fled the store that day, the memory of fear and the echo of breaking bottles likely linger far longer.
