Latest outbreaks in 19 countries as of May 1 anyone travelling should be aware of

In an era defined by unprecedented global connectivity, the act of traveling carries with it a complex new layer of responsibility: the need for proactive health awareness. As of mid-2026, the world remains a dynamic landscape of infectious diseases, where familiar threats persist alongside emerging and regional outbreaks. While common respiratory viruses continue to circulate widely, international health authorities like the World Health Organisation (WHO) are actively monitoring a spectrum of more serious pathogens. Current major global outbreaks include enduring concerns like COVID-19 and cholera, as well as significant surges in dengue fever, measles, and mpox (formerly monkeypox). Beyond these, numerous regional epidemics demand attention from travelers venturing to specific areas. This underscores a critical modern travel imperative: consulting official health advisories is no longer a mere precaution, but an essential part of trip planning.

The WHO maintains a vigilant watch on several high-threat pathogens known for their epidemic potential and severity. This list includes viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola, Marburg, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, and Lassa fever; respiratory viruses like MERS-CoV and SARS; and other zoonotic diseases including Nipah virus, Rift Valley fever, and Zika virus. The presence of these diseases in various regions necessitates constant surveillance. For the traveling public, accessing real-time, localized information is crucial. Resources like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Current Outbreak List and the UK’s Travel Health Pro website provide continuously updated guidance, offering a vital snapshot of the world’s epidemiological state. As of May 2026, these resources highlight active incidents across at least nineteen countries, painting a picture of a world where health vigilance must be as tailored as one’s itinerary.

One of the notable developments involves the mpox virus. Recent reports indicate its presence and evolution in diverse geographical settings. In Denmark, a small cluster of the more transmissible clade Ib variant has emerged, with one case suggesting local acquisition beyond travel-linked spread. Poland confirmed its first case of clade I mpox, linked to travel from Slovakia. More alarming situations are unfolding in Madagascar, which is grappling with a significant outbreak of over 1,100 clade Ib cases, and in Pakistan’s Sindh Province, where suspected cases, including affected newborns, point to a serious public health challenge. These instances remind us that mpox, while often associated with specific regions, maintains a capacity for wider geographical spread and community transmission.

Arthropod-borne viruses, transmitted by mosquitoes, continue to pose a widespread threat. Yellow fever, a severe and potentially fatal disease, has re-emerged in Ecuador with a tragic fatal case in a child, breaking a nine-month period without human cases. Dengue fever is exhibiting intense activity in several regions: Martinique is reporting high case numbers, the Maldives is seeing an increase across all its atolls, and Tonga has declared an official outbreak. The situation in Bolivia is particularly acute, with a dramatic surge in suspected dengue cases. Bolivia is also confronting concurrent outbreaks of yellow fever and Zika virus, with Zika case numbers for early 2026 already nearing the total for the entire previous year. These overlapping epidemics in a single country illustrate the heavy burden vector-borne diseases can place on health systems and the heightened risk for visitors.

Other viral diseases are demonstrating persistent or concerning patterns. Measles, one of the most contagious human viruses, is causing a major outbreak in Bangladesh, with tens of thousands of suspected cases disproportionately affecting young children, underscoring the vital importance of vaccination. Polio, represented by circulating vaccine-derived strains (cVDPV), continues to be detected in environmental samples in Malawi and in human cases in South Sudan, highlighting the unfinished global effort to eradicate this disease. Meanwhile, an undiagnosed cluster illness in Burundi, with symptoms including fever, gastrointestinal distress, and jaundice, has raised concerns as investigations continue to rule out known high-threat pathogens like Ebola and Marburg. This event serves as a stark reminder of the potential for novel or unidentified health threats to emerge.

Finally, several reports emphasize the global nature of disease transmission in our interconnected world. France has documented travel-associated Zika cases linked to journeys to Indonesia, demonstrating how a virus can be carried across continents by travelers. Italy reported its first imported human case of a specific avian influenza strain (A(H9N2)) from Senegal, also a first for the European Region, spotlighting the zoonotic bridge between animal and human health. Other regional outbreaks, such as Lassa fever in Nigeria, hantavirus in Argentina, and the Oropouche virus in Colombia, complete a picture of a planet where diverse infectious agents remain active in their ecological niches. For the international traveler, this landscape mandates a shift in mindset: alongside booking flights and hotels, one must now diligently consult the latest health advisories, understand the specific risks of their destination, and ensure appropriate precautions, including vaccinations and preventive measures. This informed approach is the cornerstone of safe and responsible travel in the 21st century.
