No sweat: How to look cool and ready for the office during May heatwave

Is the promise of a “hot girl summer” – or any variation thereof – becoming a bit too literal this year? Following one of the hottest Mays on record, the fantasy of lounging motionless by cool water in minimal clothing feels like a cruel joke for those of us melting in office chairs as the mercury soars. If your brain is too fogged by heat and electrolyte calculations to ponder work-appropriate heatwave attire, fear not. Navigating a professional look while battling a sweltering commute and often unpredictable office air conditioning is a challenge, but with some strategic sartorial choices, you can maintain both your cool and your professionalism.

The foundational rule for surviving a heatwave at work is to embrace loose, breathable clothing. Whether your workplace leans traditional or casual, voluminous silhouettes are your greatest ally. They promote essential airflow and are far more forgiving than restrictive suits or tight synthetics. For women, a voluminous blouse paired with tailored, knee-length shorts creates a balanced, polished look. Men, too, can opt for tailored cotton shorts in more relaxed environments. The key is in the fit and fabric: structured yet roomy, avoiding anything overly tight or abbreviated. This philosophy extends to accessories; a roomy tote bag is a summer essential, allowing you to carry cooling necessities like a water bottle, facial spray, or a handheld fan without worrying about your outfit’s pocket capacity.

Footwear requires careful consideration, as the temptation to slide into flip-flops must be resisted for the office. The goal is breathability without sacrificing polish. For both men and women, loafers – particularly in light suede or breathable leather – are an excellent choice. Women can also opt for smart, open-toed mules or comfortable sandals with a structured design, which allow for air circulation and are easy to slip off discreetly at your desk. The critical advice from experts is to choose shoes made from natural materials like leather, which allow feet to breathe far better than synthetic alternatives, preventing that clammy, uncomfortable feeling that amplifies the heat.

Fabric selection is perhaps the most crucial element in your heatwave arsenal. The unanimous directive from stylists is to avoid polyester and other synthetics at all costs, as they trap heat and moisture, creating a stifling microclimate. Instead, seek out pure, natural fibres. Linen and cotton are the undisputed champions of summer, with their inherent breathability and moisture-wicking properties. A cream linen suit or a crisp cotton shirt can look incredibly sharp while actively cooling the body. For women, sleeveless linen dresses or tops are ideal for avoiding sweat patches, though a playful warning is offered: be mindful of off-the-shoulder styles that might create a more revealing silhouette than intended when viewed across a desk.

Colour plays a significant functional role beyond aesthetics. While black is perennially chic, its heat-absorbing properties make it a poor choice for scorching days. Instead, lean into light or bright tones. Light neutrals like white, cream, and beige reflect sunlight and heat, while bold, summery colours can boost your mood. This season, subtle shades of lavender are everywhere and offer a gentle introduction for the colour-averse. The principle is simple: lighter shades are naturally cooling, so save the darker tones for the air-conditioned depths of autumn.

Finally, master the art of strategic layering, which is not just for fall. Modern office temperatures can fluctuate wildly between a hot commute and an overzealous air conditioning system. The solution is lightweight, versatile pieces that can be easily added or removed. A fine-knit sweater tied loosely over the shoulders or a lightweight blazer complements an outfit and provides adaptability. For women, a sleeveless jumpsuit acts as a perfect canvas for such layering. And one last, vital tip: pay attention to your undergarments. Choose seamless, flesh-toned or white options that won’t show through lighter summer fabrics, ensuring that your carefully curated cool look remains impeccable from the inside out. With these guidelines, you’re equipped to face the heat with grace and style. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to dream about that freezer.
