This beach in Portugal’s Algarve was just named the best in Europe

As a heatwave settles over Europe this summer, the collective daydream inevitably turns to the cooling respite of the coast. There is a timeless allure to the beach—the feeling of warm sand, the sound of crashing waves, and the vast, horizon-clearing view of the sea. It’s a universal fantasy, and perfectly timed to this yearning, the travel experts at European Best Destinations have released their much-anticipated ranking of the continent’s top beaches for 2026. This annual list serves as a curated love letter to Europe’s diverse coastline, moving beyond mere popularity to highlight shores that offer a profound sense of place, beauty, and accessibility.

The creation of this ranking is a meticulous process, designed to balance expert insight with real-world traveller experience. The editorial team begins by compiling a longlist, selecting ten standout beaches from each European country. These are judged on a blend of crucial criteria: stunning natural beauty, ease of access for visitors, the quality of amenities like clean facilities and nearby dining, and that intangible but essential factor—the overall atmosphere. This initial selection is then refined into a shortlist of just thirty exceptional finalists. The final verdict, however, is democratically handed over to an international panel of travellers, whose votes determine the ultimate order. This method ensures the list reflects not just picturesque postcards, but beaches that genuinely deliver memorable and rewarding experiences.

For 2026, the honour of Europe’s best beach goes to Praia de Monte Clérigo, a gem on Portugal’s southwestern Costa Vicentina. This choice signals a growing desire among travellers for authenticity over overt glamour. Monte Clérigo is celebrated not for sprawling resorts or bustling promenades, but for its rustic charm, dramatic natural setting, and a sense of serene escape. The beach is enveloped by the protected landscapes of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, offering clifftop hiking trails that provide breathtaking ocean vistas for those looking to blend beach lounging with active exploration. Furthermore, European Best Destinations emphasises its accessibility in terms of cost, noting that accommodation here can be up to three times more affordable than in Portugal’s more famous tourist hubs, making its understated luxury attainable for a wider range of visitors.

The list continues with a strong showing from Europe’s classic sun-soaked destinations, yet each entry boasts its own unique character. Securing second place is Greece’s Voutoumi Beach on the island of Antipaxos, also crowned the “most beautiful” for its hypnotic combination of brilliant white pebbles and astoundingly clear, turquoise waters framed by lush green hills. Greece further dominates the top five with Fteri Beach in Kefalonia and the famous pink-sand shores of Elafonisi in Crete taking third and fourth places. Italy rounds out this elite group with Bogliasco Beach near Genoa, a slice of Ligurian charm set in a picturesque fishing village, proving that a classic bagni experience remains irresistible. Spain, never to be overlooked, enters at sixth with Cala Mesquida in Mallorca, a serene cove beloved for its dunes and clear waters.

Perhaps most inspiring are the rankings that challenge our very definition of a beach holiday. In a delightful surprise, Norway’s Kvalvika Beach on the remote Moskenesøya island in the Lofoten archipelago claims seventh place. This is no place for sunbeds and cocktails; its beauty is raw, dramatic, and earned. Accessible only via a scenic hike, Kvalvika rewards the intrepid traveller with a stark, majestic landscape of towering cliffs, golden sand, and frigid, clear waters—a powerful reminder of the Nordic coastline’s fierce beauty. The list then returns to the Mediterranean warmth with Greece’s Rovinia Beach in Corfu at number eight, followed by Turkey’s stunning Kaputaş Beach at nine, a cascading cove also recognised on the global “World’s 50 Best Beaches” list. The top ten concludes, fittingly, back in Corfu with the iconic blue waters of Paleokastritsa Beach.

Ultimately, this 2026 ranking from European Best Destinations offers more than a simple itinerary suggestion; it provides a menu of coastal experiences to suit every temperament. Whether one seeks the affordable, nature-wrapped serenity of Portugal’s west coast, the vibrant aquatic palette of a Greek island cove, the cultured leisure of an Italian riviera, or the soul-stirring trek to a wild Arctic shore, Europe’s coastline delivers in spectacular variety. It confirms that the perfect beach is a deeply personal concept, and that even on a well-travelled continent, there remain countless shores waiting to provide that perfect moment of summer solace.
