‘The Ring’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’ actress Daveigh Chase dies aged 35

Daveigh Chase, who captured the hearts of a generation as the spirited voice of Lilo in Disney’s beloved Lilo & Stitch, has passed away at the age of 35. The news of her death on Tuesday, reported by TMZ and confirmed by her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, has sent waves of sadness through the entertainment world and among fans who grew up with her iconic performances. Her passing serves as a poignant and untimely end to the life of a performer whose early work left an indelible mark on animation and film, reminding us of the fragile line between childhood fame and the complex realities of adult life.

Her death was the result of a devastating and rapid health decline. According to reports, Chase succumbed to sepsis, which was triggered by a combination of meningitis and a blood infection. This tragic outcome was preceded by her admission to a Los Angeles hospital earlier in the month, where she was being treated for malnutrition. This sequence of events paints a heartbreaking picture of a person struggling with health challenges away from the public eye. It underscores how swiftly circumstances can change, transforming a voice once full of animated life into a memory, and highlights the often-hidden battles that individuals face long after the spotlight has faded.

Born on July 24, 1990, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Daveigh Chase’s career began with a startling depth that belied her young age. She first came to prominence not in a lighthearted children’s role, but in the cult psychological thriller Donnie Darko, playing the eerie and memorable Samantha Darko. This was quickly followed by two monumental voice acting achievements that cemented her legacy. She brought profound sensitivity and wonder to the English dub of Chihiro Ogino in Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece Spirited Away, a performance that guided countless Western audiences into the magical world of Studio Ghibli. In stark contrast, she then terrified a generation as Samara Morgan, the girl who crawls menacingly out of a well and through a television screen in the 2002 American remake of The Ring. This incredible range—from the soulful and adventurous to the deeply haunting—showcased a rare and formidable talent.

Beyond these defining roles, Chase built a steady career in television through the early 2000s. She appeared in episodes of popular series like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and held a recurring role on the HBO drama Big Love. These parts demonstrated her versatility and her ability to hold her own in varied ensemble casts. However, the trajectory of her life in the public eye took a difficult turn in the years that followed. In 2015, she stepped away from full-time acting, a decision that often marks a search for normalcy after a life spent in the industry. The subsequent chapter of her life was marred by legal troubles, including charges for drug possession and joyriding in a stolen car, which were widely reported in the tabloids and painted a public narrative of struggle.

The announcement of her passing concludes with the simple, solemn phrase: “RIP Daveigh Chase 1990 – 2026.” These dates now bookend a life that was, in many ways, lived in two distinct acts: the first as a celebrated child star who contributed to some of the most enduring films of her era, and the second as a private citizen navigating personal challenges. Her legacy, therefore, becomes a complex tapestry. It is woven with threads of extraordinary artistic achievement and the all-too-human difficulties that can follow early fame. She leaves behind a body of work that continues to resonate, with Lilo & Stitch remaining a touchstone about family and ‘ohana, and The Ring and Spirited Away standing as permanent fixtures in their respective genres.

In remembering Daveigh Chase, we are compelled to hold space for both the artist and the person. We celebrate the voice that gave Lilo her stubborn love and Chihiro her resilient heart, and we mourn the woman whose later years were fraught with hardship. Her story is a reminder of the profound humanity behind the screen performances we cherish. It urges a sense of compassion, reminding us that the figures we know through their art lead multifaceted lives beyond our view. While her time was tragically short, the characters she brought to life—with all their complexity, fear, and love—will endure, ensuring that her contribution to storytelling is never forgotten.
