Live – G7 summit: Leaders commit to ‘unwavering support’ for Ukraine

The annual gathering of the world’s seven largest advanced democracies, the G7 summit in Évian, France, has concluded with a powerful and unified message of long-term support for Ukraine, coupled with a renewed commitment to intensify economic pressure on Russia. On the final day of the meeting, leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States adopted a joint statement that goes beyond symbolic solidarity, outlining concrete steps to bolster Ukraine’s defence and cripple the Russian economy’s ability to finance its ongoing war. This collective stance underscores a strategic shift from emergency, short-term aid to a sustained, multi-year commitment, recognizing that Ukraine’s path to securing its future is a marathon, not a sprint.

Central to this renewed pledge is the urgent enhancement of Ukraine’s military capabilities, particularly its air defence. The leaders explicitly praised the “new momentum” Ukrainian forces have generated on the battlefield and vowed to match that momentum with increased deliveries of advanced air defence systems, additional interceptor missiles, and critically, long-range strike capabilities. This commitment is not merely about holding existing lines; it is about enabling Ukraine to protect its cities, its critical infrastructure, and its civilians from relentless aerial bombardment while also providing the tools needed to disrupt Russian logistics and command centres far behind the front lines. The promise of long-range weapons signifies a strategic evolution, acknowledging that Ukraine requires the capacity to strike at the heart of Russian military operations to effectively defend itself.

Simultaneously, the G7 has signalled a decisive escalation in its economic campaign against Russia, with a sharp focus on its lucrative energy sector. The recent diplomatic developments concerning Iran have seemingly added impetus to this effort, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated international pressure on rogue regimes. Leaders pledged to implement tougher sanctions, specifically targeting the complex networks Russia uses to finance its war machine through oil and gas revenues. This involves closing loopholes, cracking down on sanctions evasion through shadow fleets and opaque financial transactions, and further limiting Russia’s access to critical technology and services for its energy industry. The goal is to systematically drain the financial resources that allow the Kremlin to purchase weapons and pay its soldiers, thereby directly undermining the sustainability of its military aggression.

Looking ahead, the G7 statement also demonstrates a sober understanding of the challenges to come, specifically the approaching winter. The coalition has committed to backing Ukraine through this vulnerable period, when Russia has historically and cynically targeted energy grids, heating plants, and civilian infrastructure to inflict maximum suffering during the coldest months. This pledge involves not only military support for air defence but also practical assistance in repairing and hardening Ukraine’s energy systems, ensuring that homes, hospitals, and schools can remain operational. It is a commitment to humanitarian resilience, recognizing that defending a population from freezing in the dark is as much a part of modern warfare as defending territory on the battlefield.

As the summit entered its third and final day, the agenda broadened to address other pressing global issues, reflecting the interconnected nature of contemporary challenges. The morning’s working session focused on fostering balanced and sustainable economic growth in a fractured world economy, while a working lunch was dedicated to the safe, rapid, and effective deployment of artificial intelligence—a testament to the dual role of the G7 as both a crisis manager and a steering committee for technological and economic governance. These discussions, though separate, are indirectly linked to the overarching theme of supporting a rules-based international order, which Russia’s invasion has so violently disrupted.

In conclusion, the G7 summit in Évian has projected a consolidated front of democratic nations, moving from declarations of support to a detailed, actionable plan. By committing to enhanced weaponry for Ukraine, a tightened economic noose around Russia, and sustained support through future hardships, the leaders have sent a clear signal to Moscow: their resolve will not waver with the changing seasons or news cycles. The final press conference by host President Emmanuel Macron served to crystallize this message for the world: the path to peace lies through Ukrainian strength, and the G7 is committed to walking that path for as long as it takes. The summit’s outcomes reaffirm that Ukraine’s fight for its sovereignty is inextricably linked to the preservation of the fundamental principles of international law and security for all nations.
