Newsletter: G7 aligns on Ukraine in rare moment of unity

Good morning from Brussels. I’m Mared Gwyn, bringing you a wrap-up of a pivotal day on the international stage as world leaders conclude critical talks and new geopolitical realities come sharply into focus.

The final day of G7 discussions at Lake Geneva has culminated in a significant display of unity, particularly regarding Ukraine. In a statement released after midnight, the assembled leaders pledged their “unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.” This collective stance was notably signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, solidifying a front that had shown some cracks. Most crucially, the nations committed to intensifying “pressure on the Russian war economy” through strengthened sanctions, specifically targeting the oil and gas sectors. For European diplomats, this represents a diplomatic victory, coming after concerns that both the U.S. and U.K. had been softening sanctions to mitigate global economic fallout. The agreement signals a renewed, coordinated effort to financially isolate Moscow.

Beyond Ukraine, anticipation is building around a separate U.S.-Iran deal. Reports indicate President Trump has vowed to publicly disclose a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding with Iran, set to be signed at Switzerland’s Burgenstock resort. According to a draft seen by Euronews, this agreement would trigger 60 days of negotiations focused on sanctions relief and the future of Tehran’s nuclear program. Notably, it includes a substantial U.S. commitment to a $300 billion fund aimed at kick-starting investment and financing reconstruction in Iran. This potential thaw marks a major, and controversial, shift in Middle Eastern diplomacy, with profound implications for regional stability and global energy markets.

Shifting to technology, today’s G7 agenda places artificial intelligence front and center, with leaders meeting with executives from leading AI firms. However, this discussion on “safe, rapid and effective deployment” occurs under a stark new shadow. Just last Friday, Washington imposed export controls that abruptly blocked foreign access to Anthropic AI’s most advanced models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, citing their unprecedented potential as cyber-exploitation tools and national security risks. The company’s immediate compliance confirmed one of Europe’s deepest fears: that access to foundational American technology is no longer guaranteed. This move has served as a sobering reality check for European allies, underscoring their vulnerability and accelerating urgent conversations about strategic autonomy and homegrown AI capability.

On the European defense front, a key bilateral agreement is taking shape between Germany and Poland. Set to sign a new defense pact, the two neighbors are moving past a complicated history to bolster military cooperation amid heightened tensions with Russia and growing uncertainty over the future of the U.S. security umbrella in Europe. With Poland seeking stronger commitments for the defense of NATO’s eastern flank and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pursuing an ambitious revitalization of the Bundeswehr, the partnership is strategically vital. Poland’s role as a logistical hub for Ukraine, combined with its own heavy defense investments, makes it an indispensable ally for Germany’s goal of building the strongest conventional army in Europe.

Elsewhere in our coverage, activists in Spain are highlighting the global footprint of conflict, denouncing the environmental damage caused by Israeli miner ICL in Catalonia and its links to white phosphorus used in warfare. Meanwhile, in a surprising diplomatic twist, Belarusian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenka issued an apology to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him “young and inexperienced” and insisting Belarus poses no military threat—a stark contrast to his earlier bellicose rhetoric. As we continue to monitor the closing G7 sessions and the ongoing European Parliament plenary, these stories remind us of the intricate web connecting local environmental justice, regional diplomacy, and global power dynamics.

That’s our overview for today. A special thanks to our correspondents, Angela Skujins, Maria Tadeo, Luca Bertuzzi, and others, for their reporting from the front lines of these unfolding stories. From the shores of Lake Geneva to the halls of Strasbourg, it’s clear we are navigating a moment of profound realignment, where old alliances are being tested, new technologies are triggering security crises, and the map of international cooperation is being redrawn in real time.
