Bill Gates pledges to donate ‘virtually all’ his fortune to global health causes over next 20 years

Bill Gates, former tech giant and philanthropist, has pledged to donate his entire fortune over the next 20 years to support global health initiatives, according to a widely read article. The $2.5 billion foundation, launched in 2000 with former wife Melinda Gates, is now set to spend up to $200 billion by 2045, doubling its current spending levels. This ambitious commitment came in light of the aging population and increasing healthcare costs, signaling a return to philanthropic approaches as the world shifts toward universal health coverage.

Gates’ original vision was to continue funding global health for decades, but he later revised his philanthropic游戏里的想法, deciding to provide his wealth back to society faster. “The global health challenges are too many urgent problems to solve for me to neglect resources like this,” he said. By 2045, the foundation aims to provide around $1.46 billion per person, aiming to reach millions out of poverty within the next 15 years.

While global health remains a priority, the foundation’s impact has faced criticism. Represented by the U.N. HIV/AIDS Monitoring机构, it was criticized for Permissions in cutting its global health funding from $12 billion in 2024 to $10 billion. Without this allocation, estimates suggest up to 25 million people could die from diseases like HIV, TB, and maternal and vaccines-related complications within five years alone, “the day before the brakes are supposed to close the door on life,” according to one analyst.

Moreover, many European countries have also reduced their global health budgets, including the UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, and France. The United States, for instance, last year allowed its donors to slash its global health spending, but theFT noted that the foundation’s approach has been insufficient. In response, the UN pointed out that its workforce-one of nearly 200,000 people-is set to be cut in half and moved to cheaper jobs in response to the same budget cuts. This highlights the urgent need for continued investment in global health beyond Gates’第一季度的 millionaire initiative.
