A New Wave of European Discovery: DiscoverEU Returns for 2026

The spirit of European adventure is being rekindled for a new generation. DiscoverEU, a flagship initiative of the Erasmus+ programme, has announced its return for 2026, this time offering an unprecedented opportunity for over 40,000 young Europeans to embark on a journey of discovery across the continent. This remarkable programme is designed specifically for those born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008, launching them into a summer of exploration where they can immerse themselves in Europe’s rich cultural tapestry, delve into its layered history, and forge lasting friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds. More than just a travel opportunity, DiscoverEU represents a rite of passage, empowering young people to step out independently and experience firsthand the shared values and vibrant diversity that form the bedrock of the European idea.

At its heart, DiscoverEU champions sustainable and meaningful travel. Successful applicants will traverse Europe primarily by rail, the most environmentally friendly mode of transport, for up to seven days within a flexible travel window spanning from July 2026 to September 2027. The initiative casts a wide and inclusive net, open not only to citizens of the European Union but also to residents of Overseas Countries and Territories linked to the EU, and to young people from nations associated with the Erasmus+ programme, such as Iceland and Türkiye. As Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, eloquently notes, the programme allows young people to “experience Europe by rail, discovering new cultures and gaining a deeper understanding of our shared values.” He emphasises that for countless participants, this journey marks a formative first experience of independent travel, a unique chance to connect deeply with people from every corner of the continent.

The 2026 edition carries a particularly resonant theme, being dedicated to the principles of solidarity and fairness. It also beautifully aligns with the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Schengen area, a landmark achievement that enables the very freedom of movement these young travellers will enjoy. This symbolic timing connects participants directly to a Europe without internal borders, allowing them to move freely among 29 Schengen states—including 25 EU members and four non-EU partners: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This seamless travel is more than a logistical convenience; it is a tangible lesson in European cooperation and unity, allowing young minds to physically experience a continent that has chosen connection over division.

Where might this journey of a lifetime lead? The possibilities are as diverse as Europe itself. DiscoverEU offers a pre-planned Culture Route, guiding travellers to destinations that celebrate architectural marvels, musical heritage, fine art, theatre, fashion, folk traditions, and local gastronomy. Participants could find themselves wandering the historic, winding streets of Cork, Ireland, or exploring the formidable bastions of Valletta, Malta—both honoured as European Capitals of Culture. They might visit Lyon, France, a recipient of the Access City Award for its outstanding commitment to inclusivity, ensuring all visitors, regardless of age or ability, can enjoy its offerings. Crucially, the programme also encourages young travellers to chart their own course, empowering them to design a personal itinerary that reflects their unique passions and curiosities, turning the map of Europe into a canvas for their own adventure.

To ensure this adventure is both enriching and accessible, each successful applicant will receive more than just a travel pass. They will be granted a valuable discount card, opening doors to thousands of deals across participating countries. This card eases the practicalities of travel, providing savings on public transport, cultural attractions, accommodation, dining, and sports activities. Furthermore, recognizing that shared experiences are often the most memorable, winners have the option to travel solo or to invite up to four friends to join them on their expedition, provided their companions also meet the eligibility criteria. This social dimension transforms the journey from a solitary pursuit into a collective adventure, fostering bonds and creating shared stories that will last long after the journey ends.

Since its launch in 2018, DiscoverEU has captured the imaginations of nearly two million young applicants, a testament to its powerful appeal and transformative impact. The application window for the 2026 passes is now open, offering this generation a chance to seize their own European story until the deadline of 22 April. This is more than a free trip; it is an invitation to become an active citizen of Europe, to learn with every mile travelled by rail, and to carry forward the ideals of unity, sustainability, and shared cultural appreciation. For 40,000 young people, the summer of 2026 promises not just a holiday, but the beginning of a lifelong connection to the heart and soul of their continent.
