Martin Lewis’ MSE tells Amazon shoppers ‘look out’ when browsing Prime Day sale

Amazon’s flagship shopping event, Prime Day, is back from June 23 to 26, promising a whirlwind of discounts exclusively for Prime subscribers. For many, it’s one of the most anticipated retail moments of the year—a chance to snag everything from summer essentials and beauty products to cutting-edge tech at reduced prices. Last year’s event in July was a major success, and this year Amazon has expanded the window to four full days, with deals officially launching at midnight on June 23 and running through late evening on June 26. The company has even rolled out “Early Prime Day Deals” on popular items like Ring doorbells and Apple AirPods to build excitement. For shoppers who already have specific products in mind, this event could be the perfect opportunity to make those purchases at a discount.

However, the consumer advice website MoneySavingExpert (MSE), founded by financial expert Martin Lewis, is urging customers to stay vigilant. In a recent alert, MSE cautioned that Amazon isn’t always the cheapest option, even during high-profile sales like Prime Day. The website advises shoppers to use price-comparison tools—often called “shopbots”—such as Google Shopping or Price Spy to check whether other retailers are offering better prices on the same items. MSE notes that while some comparison sites may favor certain retailers, taking a few moments to research can help ensure you’re truly getting the best deal available.

Beyond just comparing prices, MSE also suggests looking into whether competing retailers offer added perks. Some stores, including AO.com, Argos, Currys, John Lewis, and Joybuy, may provide price-matching guarantees or extra benefits like extended warranties or free delivery. These value-added services can make a purchase elsewhere more appealing, even if the sticker price is similar to Amazon’s. In essence, the key is to look at the whole package—not just the upfront discount—before clicking “buy.”

For those who aren’t already Prime members, Amazon is offering a 30-day free trial, which grants full access to Prime Day deals as well as benefits like Prime Video and free next-day delivery on many items. It’s important to remember, though, that after the trial ends, members will be automatically charged the standard monthly fee of £8.99 unless they cancel. This model makes it easy for newcomers to participate in the sale without immediate cost, but it requires a bit of calendar-marking to avoid unwanted charges post-event.

Ultimately, Prime Day represents both an opportunity and a test of smart shopping habits. With hundreds of deals rotating throughout the four-day period, there’s plenty to explore—but the most savvy shoppers will combine enthusiasm with a dose of caution. By comparing prices across retailers and weighing additional benefits, consumers can make informed decisions that stretch their pounds further.

In summary, while Amazon’s Prime Day is a much-loved annual tradition filled with genuine bargains, a proactive approach can help ensure you don’t miss out on even better offers elsewhere. Whether you’re hunting for tech, home goods, or everyday essentials, a little research can turn a good deal into a great one—and maybe even land you extra peace of mind with a longer guarantee or superior customer service. Happy shopping!
