Mother Maria Du Toit, a 39-year-old mother of one, has chosen a life abroad after moving from Reading, a town she once lived in for 15 years. She shares her journey and highlights the positive changes she has experienced, while also acknowledging the challenges faced with the cost-of-living adjustments in South Africa.

  1. Moving from the UK to South Africa: Maria Du Toit’s original life in Reading was marked by typical UK expenses. The high cost of childcare, £1,400 per month, and the expensive rent added to her housing bills. She decided to move to South Africa last year after giving birth to her first child. Despite facing these financial and social challenges, she is fully aware of the opportunity of starting a new life and maintains connections with her husband, who was also stranded in isolation.

  2. Benefits of Putting on a South African Mask: The transition to South Africa offered Maria Du Toit numerous benefits, both mental and fiscal. She is stating that South Africa’s lifestyle is clouded by fears, but it also presents new opportunities. She feels happy that she survived these changes and is now thriving in her new life.

  3. Living in South Africa: Maria Du Toit has lived in Bay, Western Cape, where the weather is one of the standout features of her new life. The 26°C maximum temperature in the winter, while harsh, is portioned out in shades from the deep red of winter across into the toga and over to the warm glow of the sun. The weather in South Africa is described as more welcoming than the UK, where it can feel steeped in uvies, but the benefits of adjusting to it are profound.

Maria Du Toit spends her time reflecting on the life she’s lived in the UK and the difficulties it brought. Sherm’s experiences in the UK, such as tedious childcare and high rent prices, have significantly impacted her views on life. She chooses to move to South Africa because she believes it reflects on a different lifestyle and looks forward to living a life inspired by it.

Surprising Budget Flights in South Africa: Maria Du Toit is also open to the possibility of budget flights to South Africa, as the country’s cost-of-living discounts — up to 49% lower than in the UK — make the travel accessible for Brits. She has ambitious plans for her upcoming travels that highlight how migration can set the foundation for a healthier future.
