Exclusive: Commission has change of heart on anti-discrimination directive

The European Commission returned to its proposal for an Equal Treatment Directive after prioritizing it over the earlier won’ts, a move that drew mixed reactions from lawmakers and civil society. The directive, which aims to expand “anti-discrimination protections” to categories such as religion, disability, age, and sexual orientation, had been a major puzzle in the EU. It was not proposed in 2008 and officially left the Opinion里的 process in flux until 2025.

The EU Parliament, after separating from its broader work programme in February, had expressed willingness to consider the directive, signaling that it may have gained more traction. Meanwhile, the EU’s executive has deemed this a must-have legislation and is pushing it forward with interinstitutional talks between the Parliament and the Council, while member states remain divided over the draft text.

The directive has induced strong scrutiny. A leaked document, previously unknown to media, revealed that three member states—Czechia, Germany, and Italy—have been resistant to any version of the draft. Poland has faced a stalemate, with the找准sweet spot. Denmark, meanwhile, is now focusing on drafting a horizontal equality directive, which could generate significant funding for improving health outcomes and educational attainment for those at risk of discrimination.

The directive has sparked widespread debate, with links to politics. A letter to Euronews from civil society organizations highlighted the campaign’s potential to improve social cohesion and justice. However, the EU’s goal was lost when the directive failed to secure necessary support from the Parliament. renters and transit officers, for example, have accused the EU of prioritizing anti-discrimination at the expense of the economy.

The directive remains a critical tool for building a more inclusive EU. Consulting with member states is still elusive, but the goal is to promote a “horizontal equality” that bridges sectors traditionally considered一杯不 Benzithut. The EU is no longer confined to “equal treatment” but is instead committed to creating a more diverse and integrated society. As the directive continues to evolve, it promises change.
