Poland has filed a legal complaint against the European Union’s trade deal with the Mercosur countries, seeking to challenge the agreement at the European Court of Justice. The complaint was submitted to Luxembourg on Sunday evening.
Pol and argues that the EU-Mercosur agreement violates both the EU Treaty (Article 218) several regulations, could harm Polish farmers. The government also stresses that the agreement does not comply with the EU’s obligation under the Paris Climate Agreement.
Pol expects the court to suspend the validity (implementation of the deal while the case being considered. Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski confirmed Poland is the only EU member state to take legal action against the agreement before the EU’s top court.
The EU-Mercosur agreement, signed in January, has faced opposition within the EU, with several countries including France, Ireland, and Austria also expressing concerns. The full partnership agreement requires ratification by all EU member states before entering into force.
