The United Nations Tourism has recognized Europe’s Best Tourism Villages for the upcoming year, a move aimed at countering the growing issues of overtourism that have plagued famed destinations like Venice and Amsterdam. These cities have implemented stringent regulations such as day tripper taxes and bans on short-term rentals in an effort to alleviate the stress on local infrastructures and improve residents’ quality of life. The annual initiative, which began in 2021, serves to promote sustainable travel practices, encouraging visitors to explore less frequented areas where tourism can play a supportive role in preserving local cultures and biodiversity. According to UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, this initiative not only validates the accomplishments of these villages but also underscores tourism’s potential to foster inclusion and sustainable development in rural communities.

Among the 14 European villages honored this year, St Johann in Tirol, Austria, stands out for its blend of historical significance and outdoor activities. Nestled within the Kitzbühel Alps at an altitude of 659 meters, St Johann has a rich heritage dating back to the 6th century. The village boasts year-round offerings from winter sports to summer hiking, serving as a vital economic driver for the local community. Innovations like a digital traffic guidance system have been introduced to enhance mobility, ensuring a smoother experience for both locals and visitors. This commitment to sustainable tourism not only boosts local businesses but also contributes to the economic viability of the area.

In Cyprus, the village of Kalopanayiotis is celebrated for its winemaking and wellness retreats set against the backdrop of the lush Marathasa Valley. At 700 meters elevation, it features traditional architecture and narrow streets that lead visitors through its rich cultural landscape. The area offers unique opportunities such as hands-on experiences in local food production, beekeeping, and wine tasting, as well as access to ancient hot springs that were once frequented by royalty seeking rejuvenation. This combination of heritage and wellness tourism makes Kalopanayiotis a compelling destination for those searching for a genuine cultural experience.

Anogeia in Greece exemplifies a village steeped in mythology and robust traditions, nestled on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis. Renowned for its resilience and cultural richness, the village is home to historical sites like Zominthos, a significant Minoan archaeological site, and cultivates sustainable tourism through its certified nature guides. These guides lead eco-friendly tours that educate visitors about the local ecology while minimizing ecological footprints. Moreover, Anogeia promotes its culture through traditional farming experiences and has public spaces where visitors can engage in local music and dance, enriching their understanding of its unique heritage.

Italy’s San Casciano dei Bagni has attracted visitors for centuries due to its therapeutic thermal waters. The small town, with a population of around 1,600, is known for its archaeological significance and wellness offerings. Recent initiatives like the Rural Bike Sharing Project allow tourists to explore the stunning countryside on e-bikes, aligning with sustainable travel principles. In Portugal, Óbidos captivates with its medieval charm, surrounded by impressive walls and rich history, showcasing various architectural styles from Gothic to Baroque. The village harnesses its cultural heritage through a diverse range of festivals and events that celebrate literature, cuisine, and seasonal activities, offering unique experiences for every visitor.

In Spain, the village of Mura serves as a gateway to the stunning natural landscapes of the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural Park. Indigenous hiking trails and rich biodiversity make it a haven for nature enthusiasts. The village’s historical vineyards reflect its ties to viticulture, while its charming center is characterized by a mix of narrow streets and vibrant local life. Similarly, Splügen in Switzerland, with its rich trading history, showcases a commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage through sustainable tourism initiatives. Plans for new projects like a brewery and hotel aim to breathe new life into underutilized areas, enhancing visitor engagement while promoting local biodiversity.

Finally, villages like Ormana in Turkey and Urych in Ukraine highlight the importance of preservation in maintaining local heritage. Ormana features unique architectural styles tied to its nomadic past and has revitalized its historical structures into boutique accommodations. It also provides opportunities to explore ancient ruins, such as the archaeological site of Erymna. Meanwhile, Urych, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, preserves traditional customs and crafts linked to its historical significance, including the remains of the Tustan fortress. Both villages exemplify how sustainable tourism practices can foster community engagement and promote both cultural and natural conservation, ensuring these vibrant locales thrive for future generations.
