Europe Today: NATO, Ukraine and the battle over Europe’s future budget

The bustling heart of European politics, Brussels, is the focus today as key meetings set the stage for critical decisions on both sides of the Atlantic. On one front, NATO defence ministers have convened to lay the groundwork for their upcoming summit in Ankara. The discussions are dominated by three interconnected themes: the ongoing war in Ukraine and the alliance’s unwavering support, the persistent challenge of ensuring all member states meet their defence spending commitments, and the broader state of transatlantic security in an increasingly unpredictable world. These conversations are more than procedural; they are about reinforcing the unity and military readiness of the West in the face of prolonged aggression.

Simultaneously, just a short distance away, the leaders of the European Union are gathering for a European Council summit, which will feature a significant working dinner with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting is a powerful symbol of the EU’s sustained solidarity. The agenda is heavy, centering on the continuation of financial, military, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. However, the leaders must also navigate other pressing global issues, including the volatile situation in the Middle East, while beginning the complex and often contentious negotiations over the bloc’s next multi-year financial framework, a budget that must balance wartime support with long-term European ambitions.

As the EU reflects on its immediate challenges and future, Cyprus is concluding its six-month term holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU. To discuss this experience, Marilena Raouna, Cyprus’s Deputy Minister for European Affairs, joins us in the studio. She will offer a unique perspective from a smaller member state that has steered the Union through a turbulent period, reflecting on achievements in managing the migration crisis and advancing digital single market files, while also acknowledging the unresolved issues that will now be passed on to the incoming Irish presidency.

Shifting the geopolitical lens, the proposed framework deal between the United States and Iran brings a retired American military perspective to the fore. Former US General Ben Hodges weighs in on the potential agreement, analyzing its profound implications. The discussion will assess whether such a deal can genuinely enhance regional security in the Middle East, how it might reshape the complex web of sanctions against Tehran, and, most crucially, whether it represents a credible path to preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a goal that has long defined international diplomacy with the Islamic Republic.

Returning to the high-stakes dinner in Brussels, analyst Jakub Janas provides a deeper dive into the other monumental topics facing EU leaders beyond Ukraine. The table will be set with arguably the Union’s most transformative challenge: enlargement. The potential accession of countries like Ukraine, Moldova, and those in the Western Balkans promises to reshape the EU itself, requiring profound internal reforms. Furthermore, leaders must strategize on how to bolster European competitiveness, particularly in the face of economic rivalry with China, and find a way to fund these ambitions through the upcoming seven-year budget—a puzzle where every national interest must be carefully balanced.

Finally, we transition from the solemn corridors of power to the electric atmosphere of the global sporting stage. From Lisbon, Euronews’ João Azevedo brings us a moment of national pride and poignant reflection as Portugal celebrates its World Cup debut. The tournament carries a special emotional weight as it likely marks the final World Cup appearance of the nation’s legendary icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, offering a chance to reflect on his extraordinary career. Meanwhile, the focus also turns to a much-anticipated clash between England and Croatia, a rematch laden with recent historical significance, reminding us that even amidst global crises, the world can still unite around moments of shared passion and competition.
