The Dichotomous Nature of Ski Season Employment

The allure of the ski season, with its promise of snow-covered slopes and après-ski revelry, draws thousands of seasonal workers each year. Behind the glamorous façade of luxury ski resorts, however, lies a world of hard work, low pay, and often bizarre experiences. This account from a former ski resort worker reveals the chaotic reality of life behind the scenes, offering a glimpse into the underbelly of the ski hospitality industry.

The author’s first season, spent in the Italian resort of Courmayeur, was marked by challenging conditions and eccentric personalities. Confined to a windowless, furniture-less concrete shell of a basement room, the staff endured long hours and a demanding, mentally unstable manager who prioritized her own comfort over her employees’ well-being. The hotel itself was in a state of disrepair, leading to constant guest complaints. The breaking point came on Christmas Eve, when the author was informed of her impending dismissal. However, a timely revelation of the manager’s questionable financial practices and the chef’s drunken escapades led to a surprising transfer to the upscale French resort of Courchevel.

The transition from Courmayeur to Courchevel was akin to stepping into a different world. Courchevel, with its opulent atmosphere and generous clientele, offered a stark contrast to the dilapidated Italian hotel. The author found herself immersed in a vibrant social scene, enjoying regular staff events and receiving surprisingly unconventional tips, including a bag of marijuana from a group of departing guests. Despite the improved working conditions, the low wages still necessitated creative cost-saving measures, such as pre-gaming with the hotel’s questionable wine before heading out to the discounted bars frequented by seasonal workers.

A subsequent season in Tignes, France, brought new experiences and challenges. Housed in yet another subpar basement room, this time with a broken window, the author witnessed firsthand the dilapidated state of the hotel and the frequent romantic entanglements between staff and guests. One particularly memorable incident involved the young bar manager being caught in a compromising position with a married guest. Adding to the drama was the tyrannical Swedish hotel manager, whose animosity towards guests and staff alike created a tense atmosphere. His act of vandalism against a guest’s car, followed by his demand for staff collusion, culminated in a dramatic act of protest – a giant phallus carved into the frozen lake, a clear message of defiance from the disgruntled staff.

These experiences paint a vivid picture of the seasonal worker’s life: long hours, low pay, and often substandard living conditions, offset by the camaraderie of fellow workers and the unique social environment of the ski resort. The author’s accounts highlight the stark contrast between the luxurious experience offered to guests and the often chaotic and challenging reality faced by those working behind the scenes. From drunken chefs and tyrannical managers to unconventional tips and illicit romances, the stories reveal a world rarely glimpsed by the average skier.

Despite the hardships, the author’s narrative also captures the sense of adventure and camaraderie that draws so many to seasonal work in the mountains. The shared experiences, the friendships forged in the crucible of demanding work and challenging living conditions, create a unique bond among the workers. The stories, though often bizarre and sometimes troubling, are also infused with a sense of humor and resilience. The author’s ability to find the absurdly funny in the midst of chaos speaks to the spirit of those who embrace the ski season lifestyle.

Returning to these resorts years later, the author reflects on the transformative experiences and the lasting memories created during those winters. The bars, the slopes, and even the lake with its infamous carving hold a special significance, reminders of a time of youthful adventure, challenging work, and the unique camaraderie found amongst those who choose to live and work in the heart of the mountains. The ski resort, for the seasonal worker, is not just a place of employment but a backdrop for a unique chapter of life, filled with both hardship and hilarity.
