A Celebration of Europe’s Newest Cocktail Destinations

The world of sophisticated mixology has just received its latest roadmap with the newest edition of The Pinnacle Guide. This esteemed directory, which functions much like a Michelin Guide for cocktail bars, has welcomed 46 remarkable new establishments globally, with 18 of these gems shining across Europe. Since its launch in 2022, The Pinnacle Guide has grown to feature 191 bars worldwide, not through anonymous criticism, but through a rigorous process where bars nominate themselves for consideration. They are then meticulously assessed by anonymous local reviewers on a comprehensive set of criteria, including the artistry of their drinks programme, their contribution to the local community, and the unique ambiance of their venue. The guide awards “pins” as marks of distinction: one pin signifies an “excellent” bar, two pins denote an “outstanding” one, and the coveted three pins are reserved for the “exceptional.”

In this latest update, European cocktail culture has particularly dazzling news: a new bar has joined the rarefied ranks of the three-pin holders. That honor goes to Line Athens in Greece, which now stands as one of only four bars in the world to achieve this top accolade. Housed in the former Zoumboulakis Art Gallery, Line Athens masterfully blends past and present, preserving the building’s artistic heritage while offering a modern, sensorial experience. Reviewers praised its dynamic atmosphere, enhanced by daily rotating DJs, and its deeply rooted philosophy of sourcing. The bar’s menu is a living document of the seasons, changing every few months based on the peak ripeness of local fruits, botanicals, and fermentable materials. This elevation of a Greek bar to the global pinnacle, alongside London’s legendary Lyaness, signals a vibrant and expanding epicenter for craft cocktails on the continent.

Beyond this top award, five European bars were celebrated with two pins for being “outstanding.” This group exemplifies the beautiful diversity of the modern cocktail scene, from intimate hideaways to venues with grand vistas. In Italy, the tiny 12-seat CuCù in Bassano del Grappa transforms a former watchmaker’s workshop into a temple of pairing, where each exquisite cocktail is served with a dedicated pastry. Paris’s De Vie offers a journey into history, nestled within an 1800s stone cave and serving libations crafted in its own off-site atelier. Switzerland’s Funky Claude’s Bar in Montreux pays joyous tribute to the city’s jazz legacy, with each cocktail telling a story of a specific artist or moment, complete with a Spotify QR code for a full musical immersion.

The two-pin accolades continue in the United Kingdom, highlighting both innovation and conscious consumption. In Chester, the entirely vegan basement bar tbc* is a masterclass in sustainability, creating homemade ginger beer and gin while ingeniously repurposing spent citrus and fruit pulp to eliminate waste. Meanwhile, in London, The Emory Rooftop Bar offers a contrasting but equally compelling experience, pairing breathtaking Hyde Park views with a cosmopolitan drinks menu curated by an internationally renowned bartender. These five venues, though distinct in character, are united by their deep sense of place, storytelling, and unwavering commitment to quality.

A further twelve European bars earned their first pin, proudly joining the guide as “excellent” destinations. This list reveals fascinating trends, with the United Kingdom and Italy leading the charge with five and four new entries respectively. The UK’s additions range from the timeless grandeur of the American Bar at the Savoy in London to the vibrant, community-focused energy of spots like Lowkey in Cardiff and The Domino Club in Leeds. Italy’s new entries showcase its regional variety, from the coastal charm of SHUB in Sorrento to the historic elegance of the Stravinskij Bar in Rome. They are joined by singular venues from Greece, France, and Switzerland, such as Athens’s Barro Negro and Zürich’s La Catedral Bar, proving that exceptional cocktail craftsmanship is flourishing from the Mediterranean to the Alps.

The expansion of The Pinnacle Guide across Europe is more than just a list; it is an invitation to explore and appreciate the artistry, culture, and community found in today’s finest bars. Each pin tells a story of passion, from a vegan laboratory in a Chester basement to a jazz-infused celebration in Montreux and a seasonally-driven gallery in Athens. As we celebrate these havens of creativity and connection, it is done with an important reminder. The true enjoyment of these crafted experiences is founded on responsible consumption. Please always drink mindfully, in moderation, and in accordance with local laws, allowing the artistry within the glass to be savored safely and respectfully.
